A segment is the group of contacts who meet certain conditions, such as a city, a tag or a purchase.

Explanation
A static list is filled by hand. A dynamic list (segment) is worked out from the conditions, so it updates itself when someone starts or stops matching.
Segments make targeted campaigns possible: a long-standing buyer gets a different email from a new lead.
